DR Port Vintage Port

Winery: Quinta da Levandeira do Roncão
Region: Douro, Cima Corgo, Portugal
Locale: Vilarinho de Cotas
Appellation: Porto

Site: Hand harvested from estate vineyards high above the Douro river.

Grapes: Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca,Tinta Roriz, and Tinta Barroca

Fermentation and Aging: The decision to declare a Vintage year does not happen every year. In very good years, the winery sends a sample to the IVDP (Instituto dos Vinhos do Douro e Porto) for quality approval. If the sample is approved, a vintage may be declared.

The Vintage Port is fermented on its skins until fermentation is interrupted with the addition of brandy. The maceration phase is very important in vintage port in order to extract exactly the correct amount of color and tannin. It then spends a couple of years in large old barrels, after which it is assembled and bottled unfiltered.

Winemaker: Luís Rodrigues

Notes: Violet, opaque in color. Intense and complex aromatics with ripe notes of black fruits. Dense, with lively acidity, marked by ripe, delicious tannins. Intensely long finish. A wine to cellar for a decade or two…and upon opening, it should be decanted gently off the sediments. Enjoy it with Stilton blue cheese or any number of aged cheeses.
