Champagne Piot-Sévillano

logo-piot-sevillano.jpgThe Piot-Sévillano family is the latest of ten generations of Champagne winegrowers. The estate and vineyards are situated in Vincelles (Marne region), in the heart of the Marne valley.

Following the phylloxera outbreak that ravaged 19th century vineyards, the family diversified and started growing Montmorency cherries, which were highly prized at the time in the Parisian markets. It was Emile Piot (1880-1969), an expert in grafting plants, who dedicated the family's land wholly to grape production. He identified and selected the finest grafts by hand, aiming for better and healthier grapes. In those days, the entire grape harvest was sold to wine merchants who transformed the grapes into Champagne. It wasn't until 1954, when growers in the Champagne region were going through some difficult times, that Emile's son Alexis and his wife Jeannine decided to start producing wine from their own grapes. They crafted the Brut Tradition champagne, which remains one of the family’s most popular wines, and quickly sold all of the 500 bottles produced that year.

Fast forward to 2007, when the estate was inherited by Christine and her business partner Vincent, on the condition that Christine would have full autonomy in the vineyards & cellar. After taking a series of professional courses, they began to invest in the renewal and modernization of their equipment. They purchased a more environmentally-friendly tractor (electric - battery operated), a Gyropalette system to replace the old Pupimatics, and a pump to cool the tanks during the various steps in the wine-making process. During the 2011 harvest, they inaugurated a new building where they set up a new press, twice the size of the old one, along with a sizable cellar. They have purchased additional vineyards, expanding to almost 8 hectares, and are now producing up to 60,000 bottles per year to meet ever growing demand. In 2019 they built a new winemaking facility in the old schoolhouse where Christine went to school.

Prior to her winemaking career, Christine was an accomplished environmental journalist. Her passions carry through to the winery, and as such, they have also implemented sustainable and organic agricultural techniques in order to preserve the unique terroir, and in 2015, obtained the High Environmental Value label (HVE). These environmental actions include: strong reduction of treatments, zero herbicide or insecticide, use of organic fertilizers only, collecting of rainwater, protection of biodiversity, and more. The goals of all these actions is to reduce environmental impact, and to elaborate the most qualitative and natural champagnes as possible. They will be certified organic as of 2023.
