Our Wineries
Miraval
Château Miraval, France
Château Miraval may now be more famous, in the US anyway, as the French home of Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie. But the domaine has been producing wines for decades and has recently been named by the Guide Hachette (France’s leading authority on French Wine) as "one of France's top 500 wine producers". The estate, situated at an altitude of 350 meters, covers 400 Ha, with 30 Ha of vineyards. The winery was completely refurbished in 1993. The vineyards flourish on the valley floor, protected by the surrounding forest of evergreen and white oak, and parasol, aleppo and maritime pine. Vinification is geared to reduce to a minimum any oxidation of the grapes. Teams of local pickers pick the grapes into small containers to avoid any bruising or crushing. The grapes are then transferred to the cellar entrance and are placed on a sorting table where any rotten or green grapes and any leaves or other debris are removed by hand. After destemming and gentle pressing in the pneumatic press the grape juice is fed by gravity feed into thick concrete tanks which have been lined with epoxy. These tanks retain the sanitation of traditional stainless steel while delivering a more steady temperature. Total vineyard size is 30 hectares of certified organic vineyards in the adjoining communes of Correns and Chateauvert, covering the two appellations of Côtes de Provence and Côteaux Varois. The soil is a mixture of clay and chalk with small stones and the gently sloping vineyards extend along the basin of a sheltered wooded valley, where water flows in abundance and where recently excavated Roman stone drains carry the water away. The oldest vines on the property are Cinsaut. This particular strain of Cinsaut is one which gives the distinctive flavor and elegance to Miraval's Rosé. Terre Blanche vineyard was created expressly to grow Rolle as the conditions of soil, gently sloping south-facing land, and exposure to the Mistral - the unpredictable wind from the Rhone valley - were all ideal for this white grape varietal. The remaining vineyards are divided between Syrah, Grenache Blanc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Grenach Noir.
