Winery: Ca' Lojera
Region: Lombardia (Lombardy)
Locale: Sirmione (Brescia) Italy
Appellation: Lugana
Designation: DOC
In a few words: This wine starts its fermentation in wooden barrels (25 hl) ending in it as well and coming into the market after 24 months. This long period in barrel gives to this wine a strong and special character, that we consider superior. Served at 12/14 ... it goes well with elegant dishes; it is best appreciated with good friends on special occasions.
Site: White Lugana clay, relatively flat, south shore of Lago di Garda’s original watershed.
Grapes: 100% Turbiana, hand harvested only from the estate’s vineyards.
Fermentation and Aging: Fermented in ancient, 25 Hl (2500 liter) wooden botti. Ages 24 months in these same 25 Hl vessels, then bottle-aged until release.
Notes: Current release (in 2011) is the 2006 Lugana Superiore ... but fortunately the winery still has a few bottles of 2001 they were willing to sell us. Truly one of the great, until now undiscovered wines of Italy. Superiore by law must age at least one year before release and grape yields must be, at most, 70% of the maximum allowed for Lugana DOC.
Vintage: 2001
