Fritz Allendorf

allendorf_logo.jpgMax Allendorf, in his 20s, is the 28th generation from a family of winegrowers that traces its roots 700 years back. I guess by now they should know a thing or two about the Rheingau, and judging by the spectacular, clean-mineral-zap of their wines, they do.

The family has slowly acquired vineyards, in some of the most important sites along the Rhein River, and now has 74 hectares under direct ownership.

Weingut Fritz Allendorf is owned by Ulrich Allendor (Uli for short) and his sister Christine Schönleber, Max's mother. Uli handles the commercial side of things, traveling around the world to spread his charm and the good news about Allendorf. Christine's husband Josef is cellarmaster and lead winemaker.

Farming is sustainable with some vineyards now certified bio. The family hopes to spread this concept to the entire estate, and believes this is a key concept for the future. Yields are extremely low - averaging 75 HL/Ha for the basic wines and going as low as 40-50 HL/Ha for the special wines. White wines, mainly from the Riesling, account for 75% of the production, but Pinot Noir is an extremely important part of the estate's output. For example, the spectacular Assmanshausen vineyard, rising high above the Rhein, is a vineyard of 99% red grapes, primarily Pinot Noir. Allendorf's Quercus Pinot Noir is a world-class example of just how good the Pinot Noir can be from the Rheingau.

Vinification is always in stainless steel for the whites, and in barrel for the top Pinot Noir. Nothing in the cellar is hurried. The winery itself is as immaculate as any I've visited. And the wines are polished, refreshing, forward-looking - reflective both of the deep traditions of this incredible family, and of the ceaseless curiousity and energy exuded by Uli.
