Lava

Lava_logo.jpgTerre del Vulcano is situated in Celzi, not far from the town of Tufo, in the heart of the production area of some of the best wine-growing area in Campania; indeed there are three wines entitled to the DOCG appellation: Greco di Tufo, Fiano di Avellino, and Taurasi. The winemakers at Terre del Vulcano are the highly esteemed Marco Flacco and Fellipo Baccalaro along with consultant Alberto Antonini.

“Lava” evokes the volcanic soils of Campania that resulted from the ancient explosion, 2000 years ago, of Mount Vesuvius. Even though Mount Vesuvius is almost 50 Km away, the eruption brought ash and debris as far away as Northern Africa. These soils, overlaying calcareous limestone, create a unique situation for the vines that grow in the area, a mineral richness that characterizes the wines. The vineyards are sited many meters above sea level, grapes have been cultivated in this area for almost 3,000 years.

The white wines are produced and matured exclusively in temperature controlled, stainless steel. The reds, especially the Taurasi, require the polish of time in oak and bottle before release. The Taurasi, which is picked at very low yields, experiences a long maceration and undergoes Malolactic fermentation in barrel before resting 15 months in french oak. All of the wines are made with minimal technical intervention to preserve their natural character.
